Women who had the bikini and armpits hair waxed or permanently removed by laser are now doing bikini hair transplant to bring back the natural bush. The trend is common in the UK and Korea. In the 80s and 90s having pubic hair under the arms and bikini area was frowned upon; however, things are changing as women have begun to embrace their natural pubic hair. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus are openly showing pride in their bushy pubic hair. In S. Korea, pubic hair is considered a sexual strength and attraction signifying fertility and health. In bath houses in Korea, women without pubic hair are looked down upon. The S. Korean women have gone on another level of doing bikini hair transplant to shape the pubic hair in their desired shape; triangle, star, rectangle, diamond, strip, Mohawk or heart shape!
The first pubic hair transplant was performed as an experiment by Dr. Okuda in Japan before the Second World War. He transplanted hair from the scalp to the pubic region using punches that are similar to what is currently used in FUE hair transplant. In recent years, the demand for pubic hair transplant is increasing in numbers.
The bikini hair transplant procedure takes about 2 hours. Similar to scalp FUE hair transplant, donor hair is taken from the back of the head then transplanted to the bikini area in a pattern that mimics the natural hair growth. About 200-500 grafts can be transplanted depending on the desired density. The procedure is pretty comfortable and painless as local anesthesia is used. The affected area takes 2 weeks to heal and the newly transplanted hair starts to grow 3 months after the transplant. Full results can be seen after 1 year. There are no scars on both the donor and recipient area as FUE method is used to extract the grafts. The procedure costs about 2500€.
