Hair Transplant after SMP

SMP and Hair Transplant

There are millions of men and women who have cosmetic problems with their scalps and hair resulting from dermatologic and/or genetic conditions, such as alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia. A concealer is a product applied to the scalp to reduce the visual contrast between the color of the hair and the color of the skin. Concealers have been used for decades by men and women to camouflage their balding and thinning scalps. Although previous use of cosmetic tattoos have been attempted by cosmetic service providers, not until recently has this become an art form used by cosmetic surgeons.

SMP(scalp micropigmentation) reflects the use of permanent concealers in the form of a specialized tattoo applied in a stippling pattern to mimic closely cut hairs. It has been applied to a wide variety of pathologies of the hair and scalp in hair restoration surgeons’ offices. A special cosmetic tattoo instrument with a handpiece that utilizes reciprocating needles is used to apply the stippled pattern between the pores of the scalp. The dot size must be small, around 0.1mm as seen from the surface of the skin.

The pigments used for micropigmentation are mainly inert, nontoxic, nonallergenic, and tissue-stable and are injected with a needle. Iron oxide has been the most commonly used agent. The pigment substances differ slightly depending on the color required.

The limited donor supply of hair for the advanced balding pattern patient often creates a problem for the patient and the doctor. SMP, in combination with hair transplants, offers a solution not heretofore available.

The medical and surgical problems that can be addressed by SMP include:

  1. Scalp scars from scarring alopecias
  2. People with autoimmune diseases such as refractory alopecia areata or alopecia totalis
  3. Women who are balding or thinning who are not responsive to minoxidil or other medical treatments and do not qualify for hair transplantation
  4. Neurosurgery scars and scars from head trauma, surgeries, and/or hair restoration procedures
  5. Chemotherapy patients, who do not grow back significant amounts of their hair after treatment
  6. The punctate scars from FUE
  7. In those patients with lower than normal donor densities
  8. Deformities in hair restoration patients resulting from unplanned progressive hair loss in men, whose hair transplants have failed to achieve the amount of “fullness” they expected
  9. People with wide or obvious scars from donor strip harvesting techniques

Previous hair transplant patients who have become heavily donor depleted, often with significantly scarred donor areas, are ideal candidates for SMP, and it offers the patient an ability to achieve a normal looking donor area without further hair transplantation as SMP addresses the scarring and see through donor areas directly.

Factors affecting micropigmentation include the penetration depth, the length of time that the needle is inside the skin, types and conditions of the ink, and thickness, elasticity, and laxity of the skin

SMP is a relatively new modality for cosmetic dermatologists and hair transplant surgeons who wish to expand their practices. Since this is a cosmetic tattoo, the elegance of the results reflects the technical and artistic skills of experienced providers. Gaining experience in this process can bring great happiness to millions of people who have, heretofore, had few options in treating their hair and scalp deformities.

Poorly done scalp micropigmentations cause serious problems and patient dissatisfactions. One of the predominant problems with scalp micropigmentation technicians is a lack of experience. This causes them to treat the process like a tattoo or permanent makeup procedure, leading to serious issues with the end result.

The most common problems include:

  • Discolouration, usually resulting in a blue hue.
  • Oversized deposits that will never blend with real hair.
  • Pigment migration, causing a ‘fried egg’ effect under the skin.
  • Excessive fading.
  • Unnatural hairlines that look ‘drawn on’.
  • Loss of individual dot definition due to poor deposit spacing.
  • ‘Tracks’ caused by the use of micropigmentation roller products.

Combining hair transplant with SMP is the best way to achieve a great look for some special patient group. While the hair density is increased in the  most visible areas in scalp with hair transplantation, the decrease in the donor area can be camouflaged with SMP.

Can a hair transplant be done after Scalp Micropigmentation?

Yes, SMP does not effect hair transplant procedure. An experienced hair transplant surgeon can do hair transplant after SMP with no risk to natural or transplanted hair follicles.

Turkey has become a top destination for hair transplant patients. There are lots of advanced hair clinics and experienced surgeon in Turkey.

Could SMP be alternative to hair transplant?

No! SMP is known as scalp micropigmentation that is camouflage method for baldness. In SMP; semi-permanent cosmetic tattos are used. But hair transplant is permanent treatment for hair loss. The use of these two methods together, rather than being an alternative to each other, may provide good results in some special cases (low donor density, difffuse hair loss...).
