What Is Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplantation is the process of transferring the hair follicles, which are located between the two ears behind the head and which are programmed not to shed, to the shed or diluted area.

What is the purpose of hair transplantation?

Hair loss due to genetic causes or other dermatological diseases is irreversible and there is no medical way to restore these destroyed roots. Hair transplantation or hair transplant is currently the only alternative method for the recovery of those lost hair. Successful and natural results can be obtained if performed under appropriate conditions and by specialist physicians.

There are different methods of Hair Transplantation:

  • FUE (follicular unit excision method): It is a hair transplantation process of removing hair follicles one by one. Punches of 1 mm or smaller are used. It leaves small scars in the form of pearl grain. Manual, Motor or Robot method can be done.
  • Strip or FUT method: It is hair transplantation process of removing hair follicles from the area programmed not to fall out of the head as a strip and then separating them into follicular units under a microscope. Leaves a streak-like mark on the scalp.
  • Robotic FUE hair transplantation.

During Robotic FUE technique, graft extraction is done with a specific punch with a motor in which you the surgeon can automatically set-up the speed of the turn. This method tremendously speeds up harvesting so that around 1000 or more grafts can be extracted in an hour.

Sapphire FUE Hair Transplantation

Sapphire FUE is hair transplantation performed using special devices manufactured from the gemstone sapphire/ sapphire mineral via FUE technique, resulting in a better and perfectly natural looking finish. During Sapphire FUE technique, hair follicles are taken with the FUE technique, before being placed in the bald area, micro channels are opened into the scalp of the recipient and the follicles are implanted in these minuscule channels.

How is Hair Transplant Surgery Done?

Hair Transplant surgery is a procedure where hair grafts (follicular units) are transferred from the back and sides of the scalp of a patient known as donor hair (where the hair growth is permanent) to the recipient area (bald area) where the patient has lost hair.

There are two main ways of harvesting/extracting the grafts, FUT and FUE. In FUT, a thin strip of skin is removed from the back of the scalp, and then the area is stitched back. The grafts are then dissected from the thin strip, placed in a holding solution, and then the dissected follicular units are then transplanted in to the bald area.

On healing, there would be a linear scar at the donor area. In FUE, grafts are extracted one by one from the donor area using tiny punches of diameter 0.6mm-1mm. This technique is less invasive and guarantees quick healing.

Once the grafts are extracted, the incision sites are made on the recipient area, and then the grafts are inserted. The most important aspect of the surgery is creating natural results. Patients want the surgery results to be completely natural and undetectable.

So the doctor must be able to bring out a good hairline, correct hair direction and density. A follicular unit of hair naturally contains 1-4 single hairs. A surgeon must be able to distribute these grafts such that fine hairs are in the front and thicker hairs behind the hairline backwards.

The surgery must have both an artistic and a professional approach to exhibit great results. More information about hair restoration surgery.

Hair surgery is a cosmetic procedure that offers very successful results in safe hands. The procedure takes an average of 8 hours and is performed under local anesthesia. It is a permanent solution to hair loss in both men and women.

What is the length of a hair transplant surgery?

A surgery on the head usually takes typically 4-8 hours according to the number of grafts to be extrated and according to the patient’s case.

Eyebrow transplants and beard transplant take less time this is because less hair is extracted and implanted. A beard transplant takes 4-5 hours while an eyebrow normally takes 2-3 hours for the surgery to complete.

For this simple out-patient procedure, a painless anesthetic is admistered so you are awake for the entire surgery. During the process you can watch a movie, read magazines and get up to use the rest room.

Thanks to our highly skilled staff and the comfortable atmosphere at the clinic, your surgery will be over before you know it.

Who is eligible for hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation can be applied on the scars of the hairy areas caused by male and female type androgenetic alopecia, accidents and burns. In addition, eyebrow, beard and eyelash transplantation can be done with hair transplantation.

In hair loss related to genetic reasons, the patient must be over 20 years old, and if he is between 20-25 years old, he should go under a hair transplantation after being evaluated by a dermatologist.

Who should not have hair transplant surgery?

The patient should not be under the age of 20 for a hair transplantation to be done for aesthetic reasons. Donor hair should be available to meet the patient’s expectation. Patients with insufficient donor (weak donor area) allergy to anesthetic agents to be applied during the procedure, patients with infection in the procedure area, those with blood clotting disorder, skin disease affecting the hair follicles, patients with alopecia areata are not eligible for hair transplantation.

What Should Be Considered After Hair Transplantation?

Care should be taken to avoid infection after the procedure. The instructions of the clinic must be followed for washing. Dermatologist’s opinion can be taken for auxiliary treatment methods.

What Are The Side Effects Of Hair Transplantation?

Complications are not expected when performed under appropriate conditions. Side effects include unnatural result, rare result, blistering or collapse of the scalp and skin, necrosis due to local circulatory disorder, and over harvesting the donor area.

What Are The Expected Results After Hair Transplantation?

Patients with adequate donors and selected correctly will be happy with the outcome of the procedure if there is no complication.

Are There Any Side Effects Of Hair Transplant?

Here are no permanent side effects of hair transplant. However, there are some temporary effects of the surgery that gradually fade away after surgery. The most commonly experienced are:

  1. Swelling of the face and under the eyes: This happens in about 10-30% of the patients. It lasts about 3-5 days after the surgery. It can be reduced by applying ice bag on the forehead for the first 3 days after surgery. Additionally, you need to sleep facing upwards for the first 5 days after surgery. Hair transplant in Turkey
  2. Pain and itchiness in the donor area: Some patients experience pain or discomfort in the donor area 1-2 week after surgery. You can take pain killers as prescribed by the doctor. For itchiness, you can take antihistamine tablets as prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Drying crusts: Crusts form on the recipient area during the first week after the operation. These crusts easily fall out by themselves with time. However you can soften them by applying olive oil in the area, and washing the hair after about half an hour.Hair transplant in Turkey
  4. Dryness of the recipient area: Your doctor can prescribe a moisturizing spray which you can use to keep the recipient area moisturized..
  5. Redness of the recipient area: As the recipient area heals, it turns red and gradually goes back to its original color within the first 1-2 months.
  6. Shock loss: 1-2 months after the hair transplant surgery, you will lose your transplanted hair and probably some of your existing hair. Due to the stress from the surgery, your hair goes into the resting (telogen) phase. Telogen effluvium is when stress causes hair follicles to prematurely go into the resting phase. This is definitely not permanent. Hair starts growing back 2-3 months after surgery.
  7. Ingrown hair: When new hair starts growing after 2-3 months, patients observe tiny red pimple like bumps forming on the scalp. This is a result of dead skin clogging the hair follicle, thus the hair is forced to grow inwards under the skin causing the Ingrown hairs in some patients can be itchy and uncomfortable. Your doctor should prescribe some medication to treat this. Hair transplant in Turkey
  8. Allergic reaction to Minoxidil or Rogaine: Skin rash and itching may occur in some patients. If this occurs, you should stop using the medication and observe if there any changes.

Diet After Hair Surgery

Hair transplantation is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures all over the world. The procedure takes about 8 hours and involves difficulties for both patients and surgeons. After-care instructions are important for the continuation of the good results achieved at the end of this difficult process. Some patients wonder what kind of diet they should follow for faster healing of the donor area and better placement of the transplanted follicles.

Diet lacking in the essential nutrients (minerals, vitamins, proteins, and fatty acids) can cause the interruption of normal hair cycling, inability of follicles to produce new hair. In addition, factors such as smoking and alcohol have negative effects on the healing process.

Why Must Patients Wear a Hat After Hair Transplant Surgery?

Just as the sun has adverse effects to the skin, so is your hair too. The suns UV rays penetrate the skin and destroy the cells of the newly transplanted grafts; which can adversely affect the survival of the grafts and the final outcome. Immediately after the surgery up to 2 months after the surgery, patients are required to protect their hair from the sun by wearing a hat/cap every time they step outside in the sun.

What are the essential nutrients after hair transplant ?

  1. Proteins: Protein is important source of hair and all body tissues. This helps to maintain and repair process. After the hair transplantation, patients should take protein rich diet so it helps in faster healing and also leads to hair growth. High quality protein rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, milk, yoghurt, cheese and eggs can be good choices for patients.
  2. Vitamins: Full spectrum of vitamins (A, B, C, D, E) are necessary for body health and also hair.
  3. Especially B-complex vitamins helps hair growth and wound healing process. Chicken, Meat, Bananas, Avocados, Brown Rice, Nuts, and Eggs include B complex vitamins.
  4. In addition, vitamin D has an important place in hair health. Some studies have shown that low vitamin D is associated with some alopecia.. Sun exposure is very important source of vitamin D. Otherwise patients can get vitamin  D from liver, fish, mushroom.
  5. Vitamin C is antioxidant molecule and has role in healing process. Also it helps in the production of collagen and elastin. Contributes to the healing of both the recipient and donor area after hair transplantation. Some foods that are rich in Vitamin C are; Peppers, Kale, Kiwi, Broccoli, Berries, and Citrus Fruits.
  6. Iron: Iron is important for the healing process by helping to maintain adequate blood hemoglobin levels. Also iron is important for the hair texture and they also help in the proper flow of oxygen which results in good hair growth. Meat, fish, eggs, beans, pulses, green vegetables and dried fruit are sources of iron.
  7. Zinc: Zinc is important for the formation of new skin tissue and to help wounds to heal. Foods containing zinc are red meat, shellfish, milk, cheese

Although there are no studies with a high level of evidence regarding hair transplantation and diet, the above-mentioned foods may be beneficial. In Civas Clinic that is best hair transplant in Turkey, we suggest to our hair transplant patients  Mediterranean type diet may also be beneficial.

Can You Get Bald After Hair Transplant?

You will barely lose your transplanted hair, that is guaranteed. However you might lose some of the original hair if you genetically have the male pattern baldness characteristic. There are several treatments available that would help you maintain your existing hair; most of them have been mentioned by my colleagues. You need to consult a hair loss specialist to prescribe some form of suitable treatment.

Is Hair surgery Painful?

Since hair transplant turkey surgery is done under local anesthesia, it is not painful at all. The first two injections might be slightly uncomfortable but not unbearable. The second day after surgery, there might be some discomfort or pain that fades away gradually in a few days as the donor area heals.

In the first washing after bandage removal, there is some slight sting on the donor area as the tiny wounds are still open. However when you wash the second time, there won’t be any pain.
